Traffic Offenses

Stephens, Boatwright, Primeau, Cooper & Coleman, P.C. has five lawyers who handle traffic matters – William R. Stephens, John D. Primeau, Robert M. Cooper, Jr., Robert P. Coleman and C. Shawn Allen. (Mr. Stephens and Mr. Primeau are former prosecutors in Prince William County, Virginia.)

Traffic matters fall into two major categories:
  1. Simple speeding and other routine traffic matters: simple speeding (19 mph or less above the posted speed limit) and other accident related charges (failure to yield, improper lane change, etc.) are handled on an expeditious basis to minimize the adverse affects on clients in the form of DMV demerit points, fines and costs, and possible driver’s license suspension.

  2. Serious Traffic Offenses (DWI, Driving on Suspended, Reckless Driving, Habitual Offender, Etc.): An aggressive defense is necessary in these cases to prevent a myriad of adverse consequences to clients: (1) higher insurance premiums; (2) lengthy license suspension; (3) heavy fines and costs; (4) prison time; and (5) any adverse effects on government security clearances.
All five of our attorneys practicing in the area of traffic defense will provide a 20 minute free consultation to potential traffic clients.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is it possible to be sentenced to jail for a Reckless Driving offense?

A: YES! Reckless Driving is a class one misdemeanor, meaning there is a potential for up to twelve months incarceration. Due to the serious problems of aggressive driving/road rage affecting our communities today, judges and prosecutors are more likely to sentence Reckless Drivers to jail sentences. Factors to be considered include prior driving record, the speed of the offense, the driving behavior, whether or not an accident ensued, etc. If you are unsure about your circumstances, please consult one of our attorneys who specialize in traffic offenses to alleviate any doubt in your mind.

Q: Does a traffic ticket affect my DMV record?

A: YES! All moving violation traffic offenses carry associated DMV demerit points, as well as certain non-moving violations. An excessive amount of DMV demerit points can adversely affect and/or terminate your privilege to operate a motor vehicle. For more information, consult one of our attorneys or visit the Virginia DMV web page at http://www.dmv.state.va.us.

Q: How can I obtain a copy of my DMV record?

A: By visiting any DMV branch office, or by requesting one online at http://www.dmv.state.va.us.
